He made dramas more than 100. he was the first who wrote about many double suicides. The most famous plays is “Sonezaki-Shinjyu”(Double suicide of Sonezaki). He expressed in his plays the life of common people.
This story is about real double suicide at Amijima in Osaka in 1721, Chikamatsu was 68 years old. The story is like that; Jihei (28) was a paper chop owner and he had a wife and two children. He falls in love with Koharu (19), who is a geisha girl. The wife’s father brought back home his daughter and two grandchildren with all money and all kimonos. Jihei lost all, his money and family, too. He thought that will be more happier in another world and that’s why he decided to commit double suicides with Koharu.
Koharu was glad to die with Jihei, because she lived him very much and she did not want to marry with a rich man. She hated him, but she was from a poor family, her mother borrowed from a mistress a lot of money. She had to return the money as soon as possible. A rich man promised to give money to the mistress and that’s why she had to marry him.
Kohary and Jihei tried to find a good place to die, that why they were walking all anight in Osaka. They crossed many bridges, and they found the place to die. Koharu and Jihei apologized to Osan、his wife. Jihei killed Koharu by a knife. Jihei hag by himself.
